TOS Review: We LOVE Speekee Spanish

Some of you may know that my 5 1/2 year old has wanted to learn Spanish for a good two years now.  A gentle introduction to Foreign Language is also important in a Charlotte Mason education, and Spanish is the most practical for our geographic region, so Spanish it will be!  So we've done a few things here and there, and he has picked up a lot, but when we were given the chance to try out the Speekee TV program we were both really excited!

What is Speekee TV?
::online video based program for children 2-10 (Yes, it's friendly enough for toddlers!)
::includes puppets and catchy songs
::native Spanish children filmed in real locations throughout Spain
::100% in Spanish (great for immersion!)
::subtitles available (helped me translate quickly, if Elliott asked)
::designed so children learn at their own pace

Speekee FastTrack
The Speekee TV program also includes Speekee FastTrack for homeschoolers!  FastTrack includes 40 weeks of suggested activities, video clips, worksheets, and flashcards.  There are 10 primary videos, so each video is covered thoroughly over a 4 week period, with 4 activities per week.  You can view FastTrack online, or you can even have it emailed to you each week if you prefer.

Obviously I cannot stick to a structured plan, and we don't school on a regular schedule right now with our upcoming move, so for now I have decided to pick and choose activities that I know my children would enjoy, such as making sock puppets to practice Spanish dialogue.  Some of the activities are things we do anyway, such as counting or naming colors in Spanish, so we just do those naturally as the opportunity presents itself, and not necessarily as a "lesson."  Sometimes I just let them repeat the video alone, and that pleases my 3 year old, but this is one of the first things we'll be diving back into once we're settled in!

There is even a Free Practice towards the end of each unit, so if you are following the lesson plans as written, it allows you to repeat activities your child enjoyed, do a worksheet or activity you didn't complete earlier in the unit or even create your own activity to reinforce the concepts.  I think the Free Practice is a great way to get the most out of the program and help customize it to your child!

What do we think?
We love it!  My boys are 3 and 5 and both of them are learning from this program!  Elliott is picking up more vocabulary, though Emory enjoys the videos more.  They both enjoy the videos and the activities, but I'll admit I'm not a big fan of worksheets for this age, so we haven't really tried those out.  I love that the program goes at a child-friendly pace and meets the different learning styles of all children.

Obviously the videos are great for visual learners, there are catchy songs and just enough repetitiveness for auditory learners, and most of the suggested activities are hands-on or movement activities which benefit kinesthetic learners.  Because my children are still young, I am not concerned with mastery or fluency; my primary goal with foreign language at this point is to expose them to it in a fun and engaging manner.  This program certainly meets our needs!

Are you interested?
The program is available on Speekee DVD, but it is produced in Europe and uses the PAL format so it is possible they may not be compatible with your DVD players.  You should certainly look into that first. However, Speekee TV, is available online anytime.  You can try it free for two weeks, and then it is only $7.95/month or $60 annually.  There is no minimum period, which means you can cancel at any time.

As a member of the TOS Crew, I received a complimentary subscription of Speekee TV in exchange for an honest review.  The opinions expressed are based solely on our experience with the program and were not influenced in any way.
