A Child's Geography III {Review & Giveaways}

Recently I was given the opportunity to review A Child's Geography III: Explore the Classical World by Terri Johnson.  I have heard that the Child's Geography series is written in a living book style, and the books are often recommended by other Charlotte Mason homeschoolers.  I was curious to check out this brand new book and see what the series is all about!

This book is a complete history and geography curriculum published by Knowledge Quest, a very reputable company within the homeschool community.  While this curriculum stands on its own, it can certainly be used with the others for a more thorough study.  The book is written mostly in living book style, but it does occasionally have a textbook feel to it.  Either way, it is interesting and informational, and I can see it working for almost all homeschooling styles.

What Does A Child's Geography Include?
I was given access to the complete e-book, which is a PDF download of the book and downloads of the entire CD-ROM.  This really is a comprehensive program.  There are 15 chapters that cover Greece, Bosnia, Italy and so much more.  The chapters include leading questions which could be used as oral or written narration assignments.  It also includes a glossary and gorgeous photographs.  In addition to the book itself, there is an activity guide, additional maps, a prayer guide, recipes, a timeline, a list of extra reading materials and a travel log to help you label the blank maps.  This means there is something for every type of learner.  My boys enjoyed the hands-on activities, because I pulled out our art curriculum and we did a full art lesson to coincide with the lesson and activity.

Who Can Use A Child's Geography?
The book is geared for 1st-6th graders, and I feel like this is accurate.  The chapters are too long for my 1st grader in one sitting, but they can easily be broken up over a few days while doing an accompanying activity each day.  The multitude of activities makes it easy to adapt for multi-grade families to use together.  Younger students can just enjoy the reading and do the easier activities, while older students can do more in-depth activities and the additional suggested readings.

Final Thoughts
The book retails for $34.95, the e-book for $24.95 or you can purchase it with the other books in the series for a discounted bundle price.  I like it and would recommend to families who are looking for an engaging history and/or geography program!  The fact that this is an all-encompassing program makes it ideal for families who like to work together or enjoy unit studies. The living book style makes it a good fit for Charlotte Mason homeschoolers and others who enjoy quality read-alouds.
