Little Nino's Pizzeria {with Five in a Row}

I can't believe it's already December.  November was a busy month and passed so quickly!

The row I'm about to share actually happened before our row of Cranberry Thanksgiving, but I wanted to share Cranberry Thanksgiving while it was relevant.  Plus we were using this specific row as part of our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle studies.  We're not finished with the TMNT unit study yet, but I decided to go ahead and share this row of Little Nino's Pizzeria, written and illustrated by Karen Barbour, and share how we tied it into Ninja Turtles!

This is a simple picture book about a boy named Tony that loves to help his dad with the family business.  His dad is given the chance to open a bigger, newer, fancy restaurant and make more money, but poor Tony is no longer able to help out.  What happens to Tony?

Language Arts

The theme of the book is simple--bigger isn't always better.  I asked Elliott why he thought Nino missed his old pizzeria, and Elliott immediately responded that Nino was too busy, so we talked about this a little more.

We added the book The Pizza That We Made by Joan Holab as a quick reader for Elliott.

This wasn't part of the FIAR lessons, but I happened to come across a printout of the poem A Pizza the Size of the Sun by Jack Prelutsky.  The printout included some vocabulary and discussion questions, and the website linked to the poem sang by the author!  I read the poem to both boys, and Elliott did some of the questions.  Then we listened to the song later in the evening.  The links to the printout and song are at the beginning of this pizza literature study.

I gave Emory a simple P is for Pizza handwriting and coloring sheet, and I found a quote for Elliott's copywork.

After we discussed personification and looked for examples in the art, we talked about how the Ninja Turtles are portrayed through a type of personification, and I told the boys they could create their own TMNT character using personification!  Emory's was some kind of 3-headed, 100 eye-balled something or other.  Forgive me if I don't remember the exact name, because it was about forty words long.

Elliott's was a Talking TV that could help them fight crime.  It had electric wires for fingers and came to life through the "personifier" that Donatello created.

Social Studies
Geography-Story Disks-New York
We didn't exactly study geography with this book.  Instead, we simply discussed how pizza arrived in the United States through Italian immigrants, and we put our disk on New York.  New York is known for good pizza, and of course, that's where the Ninja Turtles live!

Family Relationships - Father & Son
We discussed the relationship between the father and son in the story and related it to the boys' lives.  I also asked both boys to make a list of everything they liked to do with Daddy.  Some of the items off their lists:
  • Swimming
  • Home Depot Kids Workshops
  • Going to the comic book store
  • Going to the beach
  • Burying Daddy in the sand
  • Shooting Nerf Guns
  • Making Homemade Pizzas

Character - Servant's Heart
As an extension of the lesson in the manual, we discussed being HELPFUL with We Choose Virtues! This was a fun one too, because we learned about Hat Matt, and he's dressed like a chef!  {I also asked how the Turtles are helpful, and they told me that they fight off the bad guys.}

Nutrition, Food Groups and Cooking
The lessons in the manual revolved around pizza, and this was our obvious tie-in to Turtles!  I introduced the MyPlate concept, and the boys colored a plate.

We also categorized various pizza ingredients into food groups.  Then I gave them a blank pizza coloring page and they created their own pizzas.  One kid served me pepperoni with {blue} cheese and the other pizza had pepperoni placed like a smiley face, cheese and green bell peppers.

Then for dinner we cooked pizza.  Even Eleanor got in on the action!  We talked about the purpose of yeast, watched it come alive, made the dough, rolled and kneaded.  The boys decided their pizza would be super pepperoni with extra cheese on top.  They had bell peppers and tomatoes on the side--my kids prefer raw veggies.

Then we had homemade fruit smoothies for dessert to round out our meal!

Measurements, Fractions
Since we were cooking, we naturally discussed measurements.  Then another day we talked about fractions because it's when it comes to pizza!  {Plus you know, you have to divide the pizza up between 4 hungry turtles!}  This online Pizza Fraction game was quick and easy.  Elliot also did a "pizza" fraction worksheet, comparing fractions, because it happened to coincide with the study of inequalities in his regular math curriculum.

Emory was given a little sequencing sheet to color, and then cut and paste.  Simple, but fun for him.  He told me he didn't want to forget the order, and that's why he drew the steps in the boxes first.

Details that Enhance the Text
The lesson in the manual gave examples within the illustrations that helped enhance the text, but the boys were noticing these things before I even brought it up!  When I did get to that lesson, we tied it into Ninja Turtles by relating this technique to comic books.  So of course we read a TMNT comic book and looked for examples!

Then Emory drew his own Ninja Turtle comic strip . . . one of the turtles wanted all the pizza to himself!

This was a short and simple row, but the boys really enjoyed it!

  1. That looks fun. I love the comment about the Ninja's living there are well. If it was my daughter she would tell her Annie lives there.
