Our America . . . The Pilgrim Adventure {book review}

If you're looking for a living book approach to American History, the Our America series from Susan Kilbride is a great place to start!  There's so much about history that is condensed and and distorted, that children often only have a simplified coloring book version.  In an attempt to teach children the actual events of history, Susan has carefully researched and written a unique series to appeal to children and teach them real history.

Our American . . .The Pilgrim Adventure (review)

About the Series
"Finn & Ginny’s parents are lost back in time, and the two young twins have decided to go back to early America to find them. Their first search takes the twins to the Mayflower where they discover that the Pilgrims had far more adventures than they had ever realized. On their next searches, they find themselves caught up in the middle of King Philip’s War, the Salem witch trials, the Revolutionary War, traveling on the Oregon Trail, and the Civil War. Will they be able to find their parents before the time machine sends them home."

Our America . . . The Pilgrim Adventure
Our America . . . The Pilgrim Adventure is the first book in the series.  When Finn and Ginny go back in time, they are placed in the times of the The Mayflower and early Pilgrim days.  Susan Kilbride has used something that appeals to young readers--fantasy and time travel--to capture their attention.  It works, because my boys (6 and 9) were instantly engaged.  However, she places the children in real places, with real people, and they experience life as they would have lived during that time period.  The dialogue and main characters are fictional, but everything is based on historical fact, in much more depth than I ever learned and more than history textbooks cover.

If your kids enjoy other similar time-travel style books, I suggest you look into this series.  Pilgrim Adventure is very well-written, though written for a slightly older audience than other popular series.  I would recommend it for upper elementary and middle-school students.  It, along with the others in the series, would make a great supplement to any American history study,or used as part of a living book approach.  This book is informative, historically accurate, and realistic.  To go along with her books and a study of American history, Susan Kilbride has created a list of historical chapter books that you can use to round out your studies. She also has several unit study style activities to go along with her books.

Susan Kilbride is a homeschooling parent with a degree in biology.  In addition to the Our America series, she has also written a science book called Science Unit Studies for Homeschoolers and Teachers (my review) that we have REALLY enjoyed.  Check her books out.  You won't be disappointed.
